St John Fisher is a small, one form entry, primary school serving the parishes of St. John Fisher, St. Benet’s, St Paul’s, St David’s and the local Thamesmead area. Our mission is to provide a safe and secure learning environment where children feel happy and experience success through a broad and balanced curriculum. We are committed to providing the best possible education for all our children and to enable each child to achieve the highest standards of education within a Catholic ethos. Our students are very proud of their school and we are very proud of our pupils.
Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy (Summary) St John Fisher Catholic Primary School fully recognises its responsibilities for child protection. The purpose of this document is to assist all staff to protect and safeguard children who are at risk of abuse or neglect. This policy and procedures should be read in conjunction with the relevant sections of the London Safeguarding Children Procedures.
This policy reflects the requirements of Working Together to Safeguard Children March 2018 and Keeping Children Safe in Education Statutory Guidance for schools and colleges September 2025. Our policy applies to all staff, governors and volunteers working in the school. There are five main elements to our policy: 1. Ensuring we practice safe recruitment in checking the suitability of staff and Volunteers to work with children. 2. Raising awareness of child protection issues and equipping children with the skills needed to keep them safe. 3. Developing and then implementing procedures for identifying and reporting cases, or suspected cases, of abuse. 4. Supporting pupils who have been abused in accordance with his/her agreed child protection plan. 5. Establishing a safe environment in which children can learn and develop. We recognise that because of the day to day contact with children, school staff are well placed to observe the outward signs of abuse. The school therefore: o Establishes and maintains an environment where children feel secure, are encouraged to talk, and are listened to. o Ensures children know that there are adults in the school whom they can approach if they are worried. o Includes opportunities in the PSHE curriculum, including circle time, for children to develop the skills they need to recognise and stay safe from abuse.
